Biography
Rajaram Bhagavathula is a Senior Research Associate in Division of Vehicle, Driver, & System Safety at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. His research is focused on understanding the human factors issues in the interaction between road users and the built environment. Specifically, he aims to understand the effects of built environment on driver and pedestrian behavior, heath, and safety. He is currently a PI on research studies examining the effects of roadway lighting on driver health, alertness, and pedestrian visibility. He is also a lead experimenter in a series of projects related to roadway lighting, including intersection lighting, the spectral effects of roadway lighting, work zone lighting, conspicuity of cyclists, and pedestrian safety at roundabouts. Rajaram has a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a major in Human Factors and Ergonomics from Virginia Tech. He is also a member of Illuminating Engineering Society’s Roadway Lighting Committee.
